DUI checkpoints to heat up over Labor Day weekend

At least seven sobriety checkpoints have been scheduled around the state over the Labor Day weekend, the last hurrah of Colorado’s “100 Days of Heat” campaign. Colorado’s intensified enforcement coincides with the National DUI Crackdown.  Law enforcement types, who are fond of attaching catchy slogans to each enforcement period, are warning people this weekend to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the following agencies will be conducting DUI checkpoints in the state:

Friday, August 31

• Lakewood Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol

• Colorado State Patrol – Fruita

Saturday, September 1:

• Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol – Golden

• Thornton Police Department

• Weld County DUI Task Force (with members of the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, Ault Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, the Greeley Police Department and the Frederick Police Department)

• Gore Range DUI Task Force (including members of the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Avon Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Glenwood Springs Police Department and Vail Police Department)

Sunday, September 2

• Adams County Sheriff’s Office

Colorado law enforcement officers have been averaging more than 51 DUI arrests each day since August 17, when the Labor Day enforcement officially kicked off.  That number could change as more agencies report their arrest statistics to CDOT. Most of those arrests occurred along the Front Range. Denver Police officers have arrested more than 120 people for DUI since August 17.  Police in Colorado Springs racked up more than 65 arrests in the same period, and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office charged more than 42 people with impaired driving.

“There’s no day off this Labor Day weekend for hundreds of troopers, police officers and deputies who will be working tirelessly to keep impaired drivers off our roadways,” Colonel James Wolfinbarger, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in a press release “Now is the time to make a plan for a designated driver or public transportation. There are many big events across Colorado this weekend, from the Rocky Mountain Showdown in Denver, to the Four Corners Motorcycle Rally in Ignacio, and the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo. No matter where you are in the state, please take the time to designate a sober driver and don’t forget to buckle up.”

During the 2011 Labor Day enforcement period, Colorado law enforcement officers arrested 1,442 people for alcohol-related driving offenses, or an average of 75 people per day in the course of the 19-day crackdown.

Drunken driving is a deadly serious matter.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, 10,228 people died in 2010 in traffic crashes in which at least one vehicle driver or motorcycle rider had a BAC of .08 or higher.
